PART OF OUR WORLD

Birding isn't really the only part of our world, but once again this week, it is the only part that got any blog-worthy attention from my camera.

On an early morning walk around the RV Park, a red-bellied woodpecker played hide-and-seek with said camera.

I stop to check on the world-famous North Fort Myers' Eagles whenever I'm out and about and  have a little extra time.   (It's on the way to grocery shopping, the Library, and other vital every-day activities.)   This is Harriet on the nest.  Her two nestlings are doing well so far.  I hope to get some better pictures for a later post.        But the truth is, you can see all the "action" live and read all about it on the Eagle-Nest webcam or their Facebook any time you have a few minutes.

Six-Mile Cypress Slough is one of my favorite places to walk and, usually, take pictures.    I do  a weekly Yoga session there every Tuesday.  (Believe me, you don't want to see pictures of that activity).  Last year, I followed up almost every week's class by walking the boardwalk, camera in hand. This year it has been so wet and chilly  that I haven't yet been able to get all the way around the walk.    (We've had nice days, but they just don't seem to occur on Tuesday, unless I have another appointment and don't have time to hang around after class.  Then, of course, the weather is perfect.)

The skies last week were just a little threatening, but it wasn't raining yet, so I decided to go early and walk before class.  I got as far as the first viewpoint and was able to get a few pictures of this Great Blue Heron.   Just as I was deciding whether I had time to walk a little further, the skies opened up and the rain came pouring down in buckets.    In case you wondered, soaking-wet clothing does not enhance the Yoga experience one little bit.

The Sun Will Come Up Tomorrow

(It was beautiful the day after class and we haven't had any more rain since.  Things are looking up.)

  1. Great shots! I love the woodpecker and the eagle is magnificent.

  2. Things certainly are looking up, Sallie. Lovely – and nice to see Harriet mothering.

  3. EEooo, I hate to do anything in soaking wet clothes! 🙂 Love your beautiful photos!

  4. Sounds like a pretty nice world

  5. How lovely…. I was freezing out waiting for the SPCA to come and get the injured goose..

  6. your woodpecker is worth some shots 🙂
    Gorgeous skies too.

  7. WhenI see that woodpecker, I remember the story of the wife who was turned into a woodpecker because she could stop gossiping. Beautiful bird.

  8. I would love wet and chilly. It’s so hot here in Arizona right now!!! I enjoyed your birds, but how wonderful for you that you do the yoga thing. I’d fall asleep in those kinds of settings:) Have a great week ahead!

  9. Yes, yes – I do want pics of you in Yoga! I love the woodpecker photos. I hear them drumming sometimes in the spring, but they’re so far up on the lodgepoles, they’re like little specks if I try for a pic.

  10. I say I have other hobbies besides birds to…. and, even though I don’t go out and about too far looking for them I’m always at my window watching who or what comes to our feeders … and am rewarded often with great little guys….

  11. What a treasure of photos/sights on your walk. They are a delightg to view.

  12. We always see so many of those little woodpeckers at Corkscrew. I’ll be there soon!

  13. Wonderful sightings, and your pictures are all beautiful.:)

  14. I enjoy your bird shots. I will probably never see them for myself.

  15. Fantastic shots of the birds. I particularly love the ones you caught of the woodpecker.

  16. Great photos – I especially like the Heron and the Slough behind it. (this is the third time I have tried to post a comment – they just disappear!)

  17. birding is such a GREAT hobby and sure does provide some GREAT blog material. i have always enjoyed watching the birds, but did not have the time to really enjoy it until recently.
just like photography, pictures were always about the kids!!!
    awesome captures, exciting sightings!!!!

  18. I love when you go birding so I can see birds I know, sometimes, but don’t get to see in AZ.
Your wit and humor always makes me smile. Wet Yoga clothes has to be uncomfortable. Ever hear of a rain coat? 😉

  19. Lovely photos, the woodpecker is very handsome!

  20. At least you have some birds to watch ! For the moment I only see magpies and crows, nothing else, not even a sparrow ! My poor cats !

  21. You have such beautiful birds in your area. Love the colourful woodpeckers. Beautiful sunset.

  22. I can’t imagine popping along to the shops but stopping off to watch Bald Eagles. It sounds a little bizarre but also wonderful that the eagles are so well respected by your community.
Looks like you’re suffering from a typical UK day of sunny showers which consist of mostly showers and not much sun. Most annoying when all you want to do enjoy a day to the full.

  23. sorry you got so wet on the way to class, but what a wonderful way to start the day, out with your camera. Have a great week.

  24. With beautiful birds like these, fire away!
    Your photos are really good…

  25. I always enjoy seeing bird photos, so post as many as you like! These are wonderful. I’m always checking in on Harriet and her family online. So glad they were able to get the baby untangled from that fishing line and back in the nest. Whew!

  26. Gorgeous place. Beautiful birds.

  27. The Eagle certainly has a super-clean head 🙂
The Woodpecker poses are awesome, Sallie.
    Nice snaps.
Are you teaching or taking classes?
    Have a Happy Week!!
    Peace 🙂

  28. I have woodpeckers at my feeder like that, they live in the little woods next to the house and I hear them more than see them!

  29. Lots of pretty birds in this post. Have a wonderful week!

  30. Marcia

Love the photo of the eagle looking out from her nest.

  31. That woodpecker is just special. I love your walks. They are all bird worthy!
    Linda

  32. love woodpecker shots. 🙂

  33. Its good to see Harriett! She has her wings full this time of year with her babes…Great snapshot of the red bellied wp also…and the heron, we have had some lovely weather this week after a Stormy and windy end to last week!

  34. Ah … the fickle weather sounds very familiar! Those slope shouldered herons remind me a bit of penguins when they stand still. We have them in my neck of the woods too … the herons that is. They get into action rather quickly, though, when a fish swishes through.

  35. I’m sure there’s more than one specie of woodpecker, and I want to see every one. I am fascinated by them.

  36. That eagle shot is quite special. I hope the heavens are in alignment for you this week and you get to complete your walk in the dry.

  37. It’s wonderful to live here and see such amazing sights when we are out and about. I saw a Kestrel today on my way to the library. (and a flock of egrets) I need to check on the eagle web cam. I haven’t done that in a long time! Hugs!

  38. Oh gorgeous shots of beautiful birds and nature ~ Love the eagle shot and that you continue to check on them ~ Glad you are having fun!
Happy Week to you ~ ^_^

  39. Aha! Here it is! The comment box didn’t come up and I was afraid I’d have to use carrier pigeon to get this to you…in keeping with the “bird” theme of your photos. I think that woodpecker was having fun with you, ducking in and out of sight! They are pesky things. Love those blue herons.
It’s been cool here, but not too much rain. Rain comes only on the days that I’ve scheduled to play golf! Why is that? I’ve been bad, but this is ridiculous! 🙂

  40. Hi Sally, lovely pic of the eagle! We often have some “big wings’ flying over our house. The eagle is my fave though!
Before I forget, may I remind you to link to the SEASONS meme – my link is open Mon-Wed. so there’s still time. The post is called “Seasons-Curious about March.” Hope to see you there! Have a lovely week:)

  41. Hello Sallie, I had to laugh at your birding comment. Sometimes I think birding is mostly what I do when I am out too. I am happy to hear the eaglets are doing well. I love your birds, scenery and the gorgeous sky shot. Happy Monday, enjoy your new week!

  42. sylviakirk

Beautiful, superb captures as always, and, yes, we do indeed live in a fabulous world!! Thanks, as always, for sharing yours, Sallie!! Have a wonderful week!!

  43. My dearest Sallie,
you always take my hand and lead me to a wonderful world which my eyes usually don’t see, and I’m so very grateful to you for this !
May your week be filled with much, so much joy
    sending dear love to you
    Dany

  44. These are really gorgeous!

  45. What a lot of opportunities you have for birding as you go about your daily routine. I hope your weather is looking up now and that you make it around the boardwalk before too long.
BTW, the sunset in the post below this is magnificent!

  46. Wonderful bird shots! Glad you were able to walk and snap!

  47. Just gorgeous! Fabulous bird shots! What a wonderful world we live in…

  48. I used to do yoga. Then I thought I’d do it in my home with a tape. Nope! I do work out 30 min. a day, if I’m not lugging wood!
