 We're still in rainy western Oregon and, although we'd almost given up, last week we did get some more blue sky after all.

It rained hard all day long last Friday.  Then finally – about 5:30 – the rain seemed like it was letting up a  little so I grabbed raincoat, camera, and umbrella and headed out for a quick neighborhood walk before dinner (and dark).  Not even half an hour into the walk the skies completely cleared. And it was as if the sun was packing all the brightness it could into the last few minutes of the day.

It burnished the trees and made even prosaic buildings glow.

This beautiful yard is  on the corner of a street across from a City Park a few blocks from where we live.  It's been more picture-worthy than the Park all summer long and it still shines in mid-October.  Here are just a few of the flowers — on a different day's walk between showers.

Roses are no longer at their peak, but this one was still beautiful in all its faded glory.

 

You have to look a little harder for natural beauty on rainy days in the city — but it is definitely still out here!

    Fall’s colours are so beaurtiful and so moving. We know it : in a few days thet’ll disappear and just black, grey and white ´ll stay… But not in Florida !

    Beautiful series of photos. The glow in the first two photos is stunning. And I know the feeling of trying to get good photos in rainy weather. We have had so many endless days of grey cloud and rain, it seems unbelievable.

    All that rain keeps the flowers growing. I saw a yellow dahlia like the one you photograped in Beaver Creek. I love its dark burgandy leaves. You fall colors are stunning.

    The flowers are amazing this late in the year! Rain in the city reminds me of how treacherous it was to be on a NYC sidewalk in the rain if the many umbrella spines didn’t poke you in the eye as they passed by one might impale your leg as it is released by a femme fetal as she can no longer handle it, her phone, her pocket book and hold onto her hair piece at the same time while walking in high-heels! The sidewalk and the trash cans were always full of umbrella skeletons after each rainfall…never understood the need for one to carry a GOLF sized umbrella on a city sidewalk :o/

    Lovely colours-between showers. here in the UK Midlands the trees provide superb autumn colours, but it is getting wintry and is dark before 6pm-and tomorrow the clocks go back.

    You sure have some autumn glow there Sallie. It’s very true that under certain conditions and after rain the sky can be very clear with high visisbility and the light very bright. Hereabouts it works if the wind direction is from the north but I don’t know why.

    Wow – that tree is aglow! I don’t mind hot and I don’t mind cold, but I can’t seem to get past my dislike for rain. You’re right – there is a lot of beauty to be seen if we look. Now, if I could just force myself out the door, I might discover rain isn’t so terrible.

    I like the creative effects of the framing around the roses. It shows off the beauty no matter what stage of bloom or decay. The rain has been steadily falling in my neck of the woods too. Its pitter patter on the roof is quite cozy so it’s been taking a little extra effort to grab my umbrella and go outdoors. 🙂

    you have as much color as we do. We have mostly grey days now but I don´t mind. Our groundwater is so low we can walk on some shallow lakes. But, of course, I don´t mind a bit of sunshine every now and then.
