Rabbit rabbit rabbit!

Happy June!   An old superstition claims that if your first words on the first day of the month are 'Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit' you are guaranteed good luck for the next thirty days.  I don't think Bill was too impressed when I mumbled them early this morning, but he did return the greeting a little while later — so I think we're good to go.  (As long as I remember to avoid black cats and ladders and all those other superstitions I also don't really believe.)

This lucky bunny was snacking on grass growing on the canal walls — he hopped past while we were relaxing on our covered porch (called a Lanai here in Florida) enjoying the relatively cool evening temperatures. Our breeze  comes from the wall on the Canal side which is screened with one sliding window that opens to the outside.  But the grass and the rabbit were on the other end, so the picture is through the glass windbreak wall on that end.    I'm grateful to have this outdoor living area, especially on these long evenings.

Unexpected wildlife is a nice bonus.  Here's another close to home sighting:

Night herons ur1

Coming back from a short evening stroll last week I spied these two Yellow-Crowned Night Herons patrolling the walk just across the Canal from our house.  We do see more birds in our neighborhood this time of year because most of the people are gone.

We had a close wildlife encounter of another kind when we were away last month:

Turtle rescue

Why did the turtle cross the road?  Because he had help from a gallant rescuer.  Cars were backed up both ways along Merritt Parkway waiting for this turtle and the poor thing couldn't quite make up its mind whether to proceed or go back.  So Bill just jumped out of ours and very gently assisted it into the grassy verge along the beach.   He got thumbs up and smiles from quite a few drivers. There were no angry honks at all.  Sometimes faith in humanity is restored in unexpected ways.

  1. I should have read your post months back, first day of June.
I should have written The White Rabbit repeatedly, many times.
I shall be very lucky for the whole year.
    😆😆😆😆

  2. I just wanted to tell you that I read every single word of your London adventure blog. Beautifully done. Our visits have only been vacations — three weeks last year, two weeks in 2018. I’ve been a couple of other times but Rick only one other. But we love it and hope to return again. Like you, we want to be more than tourists, discover neighborhoods, off the beaten path things, as well as the stuff you want to see because of all the history. You’ll never run out! Thanks for sharing all that.

  3. Dear Sally,
well now, I’d never heard of this old superstition before! I do know the one about black cats (but since I had a black cat for 19 years who surely crossed my path countless times, I’m quite convinced those lovely creatures don’t bring bad luck. With ladders, though, I’m not so sure 😅).
Sticking with the animal theme – your recent encounters were both delightful and, at times, quite exciting: the rabbit is so cute, even striking a pose for the photo like a pro! I also loved your meeting with the patrolling Yellow-Crowned Night Herons – it’s comforting to know that such attentive guardians are keeping an eye on the neighborhood 😉.
And the turtle experience truly touched my heart – such a beautiful example of humanity at its best, especially your dear Bill, the rescuer, but also all the patient drivers who waited calmly. It reminded me of something that happened here: a pair of ducks once stopped at a crosswalk near our home – and all the drivers waited as the two waddled across the road in single file. It was such a funny and heartwarming sight!
    Warm greetings from Austria 😊🐢🐇,

I always think of black cats being lucky!😊

  5. Lovely photos! It’s always exciting to spot some wildlife and especially to be able to help it a little too.
We used to say “White rabbit” on the first of the month.

  6. You will undoubtedly have good luck, good Karma this month, along with a very grateful tortoise!!
    Here’s to a happy month!

  9. Hello, June light,
May your days be gentle, your evenings just right.
A bunny through glass, a heron in grace,
And a turtle helped cross to a safer place.
Superstitions may dance, but kindness is real—
Like breezes through lanais and moments that heal.
So here’s to good fortune, wherever you roam,
And the wild things that wander so close to home.

That was really nice of him….in theory you can pick them up by the back shell, never the tail..but I would be afraid…

  14. I’d never heard that saying before. Interesting. I wonder where it comes from and how it started? I enjoyed all your wildlife photos. I always enjoy seeing wildlife and nature in the most unexpected of places. Happy weekend to you and have a wonderful June.

  19. Happy month of June, Sallie! The bunnies are so cute! We saw a few tiny baby ones recently hiding behind our plastic landscape debris bags. They were just inches in size.
Oh my! Bill was brave to rescue the turtle from the highway! I’m glad the cars all cooperated by stopping!

  20. Some nice sights.
We have yellow crowned night herons that hangout at a county park nearby. Always fun one.
I’ve helped more than one tortoise get to the other side of the road.

  21. Way to go Bill!!! I wish I would have known about rabbit rabbit rabbit. Perhaps we will get a bit of good luck from the bunny that showed up in our yard a few days ago. I’m thinking it was June 1!

  30. We say Happy Rabbit Rabbit day in our family and it’s become quite a joke as to who can say it first.
Great photos of the Yellow-Crowned Night Herons.

  31. Sallie, while I have heard about other superstitions like the black cat and ladder, the rabbit, rabbit, rabbit was a new one, so glad you say one and hope you do have good luck all the year. It was very nice of Bill to help the turtle cross the road.

  32. Hello,
Happy June Sallie! I love your cute rabbit. It is great of Bill to help the turtle safely cross the road. Great captures of the Yellow-crowned Night Herons. Have a great day and happy week ahead.

  33. Stewart M

My mother’s version of the first day of the month good luck charm was to say ‘white rabbits’ – and was often awoken by it being shouted up the stairs! She had me as a son, so the jury is still out as to the efficacy of this act!!!
Cheers – Stewart M, Wilsons Prom National Park, Victoria

  34. I’ve never heard of that superstition before. SO I wish you good luck. Looks like you have a lovely place and enjoy the evenings. Good on you Bill for rescuing the turtle. Enjoy June, have a wonderful week. I am joining you at Mosaic Monday.

  35. Those Yellow-Crowned Night Herons are such a treat to see. I’m glad you took a photo. Fun rabbit photos, too, especially the last one. Your lanai sounds lovely. Happy lucky June to you!
