LONG TOM COUNTRY TRAIL

Winery 21 These pictures are from a recent Saturday drive on the Long Tom Trail (in rural Lane County Oregon).  We went with our friends Donna and Sherm and had a lot of fun exploring a part of the Willamette Valley that we didn't know well at all.

Even though we lived in this area for thirty years and still visit every summer, there are still new places to go right here at "home"!   This country trail covers some beautiful scenery and has a number of places to explore.  Some of these stops – flower farms and fields, sheep and alpaca ranches — might be best in the Spring, but there are several wineries on the trail.  Fall is a perfect time to visit those.

Grapes hanging16 It was one of those Oregon days when the weather varied — every few minutes — from bright sun to clouds and spitting rain.  We were lucky because the sun came out each time we wanted to stop.  Our wine tasting was just meant to be!

Grapes were heavy on the vines and harvesting and pressing were in various stages at each of the places.

We visited and tasted at High Pass Winery, Pfeiffer Vinyards, and Benton-Lane Winery. Pinot noir is the wine Oregon is most noted for.  All of these three also make good white wines.   Grape vines 22

Another smaller vineyard, Rainsong, was closed to visitors because they were all busy with the fall press.

The three wineries were quite different from each other in atmosphere as well as in the taste of their wines.

High Pass is small and friendly, like visiting a neighbor and being offered a taste of their favorite wines — which were really delicious.

Pfeiffer has a kind of dark formal tasting area, built like an Italian wine cellar/bistro.  Their wines are sold only on their premises.  And they charge for their tastings.  We know they do that now in California, but this is the first time we'd ever encountered tasting fees in Oregon.

Benton lane winery wine tasting 19  Benton-Lane has a large bright and open tasting area, with a full wine bar.  Their pourers were friendly and very knowledgeable.  It is set up for parties and receptions, but is always open for drop-in visitors as well.

Good friends, good wine, pretty decent weather.  A fine Autumn weekend!

  1. Actually, she’s a flatlander. Their place is on the opposite side of the Long Tom river. The trail wends through the hills to the west.

Um, maybe you haven’t followed this “trail” around, but isn’t part of it where your daughter lives?

  3. Reading this post makes me wish I was out there on the road traveling too … almost 😉
I appreciate the virtual visit and can almost taste the wine from those lovely grapes … but it’s much too early to imbibe at the moment if I want to get anything accomplished today.
As for sharing some of my sister’s photos occasionally … I enjoy doing so … though I’ve barely scratched the surface of what her husband has snail-mailed me on DVDs. I appreciate your kind comment on my October 6th post at Small Reflections. Currently I have more time than usual for blogging because my best friends are also on the road in their RVs with their hubbies, but when they return I’ll have less time at the computer. I post in spurts as time permits … not nearly as often as I did initially and I hardly write anything these days. Hopefully I’ll get back to that eventually.
I’ve told my sister I’ll teach her to edit her photos and add them to the travel journal she’s keeping by hand … but I’m not likely to do it all FOR her.
Hope you’re having a lovely day on the road ;–)
    Hugs and blessings,

  4. Hi Sallie,
The last couple of times I’ve tried to access your blog things have locked up on me. Today, finally, things seem to be ok.
I scrolled down and looked at your recent travels in case when I got this far that I couldn’t finish. 🙂
    Love that bench below.
The vinyard looks like a lovely place to visit. Those grapes are luscious looking. I’d love to be sitting looking out over the vines with that gorgeous sky I see.
    Safe travels.

  5. Chatty, We didn’t become Full-Time RVers because it was ugly here! We just wanted to see the rest of the country too. Anytime you are in Oregon when we are, a glass of wine is on me!

Oh my gosh and you didn’t invite me – you are making Oregon sound like a wonderful place to live – who knew?
