QUARTERED TO DEATH

Qrtr When we first got married, Bill's grandfather told us to buy quality or "you'll be nickled and dimed to death."  Allowing for inflation, this is how we feel right now.

But it's not because we're buying cheap stuff.    These are real, not metaphorical, quarters!  We don't have a washer and dryer (yet ) in our canal cottage — we do in our RV that's back in Oregon. (I know that seems backwards.)   So, I don't know if we're extra clean or extra dirty, but those twenty-five cent pieces flow pretty quickly through the laundry machines here in the resort.

002 And last week, we trailered the boat to the DIY-carwash a few blocks down the street and I think we spent about forty bucks from the coin machine to wash the green and black slime off of it!

This is Bill doing the hard part of the do-it-yourself.  I took a photo break from my part (dropping the quarters into the slot).

So here's what I learned  through this  –  it hurt more to spend those quarters five dollars at a time than it would have if we'd written a check for twice that amount to have somebody else do the dirty job.  Not logical at all, but there's something about those quarters clinking, clinking……..

001 So I'm thinking maybe I'll change all my cash into quarters and use them when I go grocery buying — that'll make me think twice about those impulse purchases.  (Sure!)

The good news is that the boat is now docked where it belongs  — on the canal in front of our cottage.  There were a few other things besides dirt that had to be fixed, but all-in-all, it seemed to come through its long period of dry-land storage quite well.

We're looking forward to using it often.

We appreciate all visitors and commenters! Thank you.

  1. I smiled when I read the part about very clean or very dirty. My mom used to say that. Cash sure is different, isn’t it?

  2. It’s that season again. You must decide how much you want to pay for your leisure activities. It’s a priority for many!

  3. Sallie, at least you weren’t dropping those quarters into a slot machine:) Back in the days when we had a boat, I think some of our biggest arguments took place putting the boat in the water and then again when it was time to take it out. It never seemed to go smoothly for us.
I’ve been on a little blogging break, but you should start seeing more of me now. Missed you.

  4. Looks like a lot of fun is in store for you with the boat as long as you don’t run out of quarters.
Being an Aussie I’m not sure how much they are worth…is 25 cents?

  5. Sallie, you’re actually quite right. Dulwich Hill in Sydney was named after the Dulwich in London. The suburb with the canals in Sydney is called Sylvania Waters. You can see my post of the canal at:
