LUBBERS

(Not-so) MELLOW YELLOW MONDAY IS HERE.  CLICK FOR MORE YELLOW PICTURES

Od

Here's another recent visitor to our deck.  This is a Lubber Grasshopper or Locust.   Apparently they usually show up around this time of year and are very destructive to trees and crops.  These guys are big bugs (about 3-6 inches long) — and they can walk on water.  I shoved one into the Canal the other day because I didn't want the smash mess and he just skimmed right across.  (I guess really  it was swimming.)   I watched him cross, climb up on the dock across from us and walk off to see what he could eat over there.

We do have a variety of insects in Florida.  But we had them in Oregon too (maybe not this big).  I think it's part of living near the water.  The only place we've ever stayed where we never saw an insect was in Tucson AZ.  I think it's too hot and dry for them.    We enjoyed our stays in Arizona, but it was too dry there for us too.  So it looks like for us water-"lubbers", putting up with the bugs is just a part of life.

We appreciate all visitors and commenters! Thank you.

The cold probably makes their growing season shorter in the northwest and in the south it is all year round. sandie

  3. What a beauty! And big too..

  4. I already know you have a good eye but you must also have a great camera. This is such a clear picture of this little creature. I’ve never heard of a bug that walks on water. Very interesting.

  5. Oh the bugs and stuff are there in Tuscon too. They just come out at night when it is cooler. Does that ease your mind?

  6. What a great shot!
I would have been so afraid that when my eye was on the camera viewer he would have turned and been on me. 🙂
I don’t really like most bugs.

  7. It is sad that they are so destructive to the trees. Great capture for MYM!

  8. Great shot! What wonderful colors he has. Can’t say I am fond of most bugs especially chiggars as I have multiple bites from being at the lake this weekend. However, I am very fond of watching lighting bugs on warm summer evenings. Glad to see you had come by to visit.

  9. This year has been horrible for Japanese beetles… and grackles and blackbirds. I thought these birds were supposed to eat the beetles and this is their only saving grace. But, no… they just shuffle all of the safflower seed out of the hopper feeder onto the patio and then walk around in it. What a mess. Haven’t seen these here yet… but I wouldn’t count them out either.

  10. Great shot! I’ve never seen this before.
    Happy MYM!

PS…Ohh my, that Lubber is quite colorful…isn’t he? Sallie, just wanted to let you know that I tried to comment on your SF post and for some strange reason, it wouldn’t let me! So I am trying on this post!

  12. Isn’t this a beauty! Look at all the shades of yellow and the other colors. And his curves and angles. I know it’s a destructive bug but so marvellously designed.

  13. Great shot and the destructive critter looks quite attractive. We have them here too but I haven’t seen one so colourful. We call them grasshoppers or locusts.

  14. I wonder I couldn’t see the photo. Happy Monday!

  15. Looks like quite a lubber fiend to me! Great shot.

  16. At first glance it appeared to have 2 heads. I can say I’ve never seen something like this before and hopefully I won’t. Have a great day. Jude

  17. Eeeeek! I’ve never seen one up so close before. It’s kind of pretty in a way, but I still think they’re yucky critters! Hope you have a great week 🙂
