THE SURVIVOR

SKYWATCH FRIDAY IS CELEBRATING AN ANNIVERSARY.  Click on the links and look up!

A while ago, we posted a picture of this bird (or one very like it) rat-a-tatting-on a metal lamp-post.  After that, we learned that the male woodpecker tries to make as much noise as possible to attract a mate.  I guess a metal post would help with that goal.   At any rate, the birds seem to have survived pounding their little bills against the metal and are happy now just working over the trees looking for dinner.

We appreciate all visitors and commenters! Thank you.

Fabulous shot of that woodpecker! sandie

  2. I love woodpeckers but had no idea they made noise to attract a mate. I learn something new every day. I don’t know how you got such a gorgeous close-up but it’s beautiful.

Based on cars and motorcycles and stereos, I’m thinking that human males aren’t all that different.

  4. this looks like a beautiful watercolor.

  6. Woodpeckers are loud but they are also beautiful birds and I always enjoy seeing them. Nice shot, Sallie.

  8. I love woodpeckers, its amazing how noisy they can be, I’ve never actually seen one tapping on metal though I’ve heard of them doing that. You’d think it would give them a headache!

Happy SWF Sallie. Enjoy the weekend.

  10. Look at that beak! His colors are gorgeous – surely he can attract a lady friend!

  11. And you caught him with this mouth open – cool!
They like to peck on the flashing on our fireplace.

  12. Not only their dinners, but all those little ones in the nest, too!

  13. They sure can be noisy

  14. Terrific to see this. We don’t have Woodpeckers in Australia.
