THE SMALLEST FULL MOON

FOR SKYWATCH FRIDAY, where bloggers all over the world are looking up!

Last March we watched the "super moon" from the backyard of our home in Florida. It was lovely to look at, but I didn't get good pictures. This week, from the RV's backyard here at Fern Ridge Shores, the smallest full moon of the year was more photo-friendly.

MOON THR TREES

This month's full moon (on Tuesday) was nearly at its maximum distance from the Earth making it appear much smaller than full moons usually look. (The March moon was nearly as close as it could be.)

Here's a link to an article at Space.com that explains all this much better.

We appreciate all visitors and commenters! Thank you.

  1. I always love to see the moon “peeking” through the tree branches–nice shot. I always get a little confused as to why it is a huge orange ball on the horion sometimes and other times a little yellow disc in the sky. It has been too long since I learned all of that in school–I’m in need of a “review” course!!! Have a nice week, Sallie. Mickie 🙂

  2. Your post is gorgeous. Thank you!

  3. I really liked this month’s Harvest Moon – it lit up our forest! Glad you got a photo ’cause I didn’t!

  4. aahhh our little Luna..awesome.

  6. I have to go back and look what day I was taking moon pics and see if it was the full moon.
The smallest – didn’t know there was such a thing. 🙂
I like the softness of this and how those two little branches seem to be cradling the moon!

  7. Lovely shot!

  8. it’s a sweet little moon

  9. Nice shot of the sky through the trees, Sallie. Last night I could see Jupiter as I looked at the moon from my front yard in Jupiter, Fl. pretty cool 😀

  10. I would love to ‘capture’ one of those huge harvest time full moons that scared the pants off me when I was a child…I thought it was falling on us!
That is a nice shot through the trees Sally.

  13. Love the framing in this photo!

  14. I did notice that about this month’s full moon, Sallie, but I didn’t know about the reason for it, – I always think about October’s full moon being great and orange and voluptuous, but I guess it can’t possibly be if it is a time when it is furthest from earth.

  15. I didn’t take any shots of the full moon this month other than with my eye. Next week I’ll have a view of the crescent moon in my sky shot for those who can spot it.

  16. wow, when she was rising last night, she looked pretty big and orange to me! 🙂

  17. When I saw the full moon the other night, I thought it looked smaller than usual. Now I know why!
