SPRING ALARM

This post is linked to World Bird Wednesday **

Please join us in saying good morning to Woody, who has been our alarm clock this Spring.  Our 'cottage' is situated with the living part of the house where we can look out on the canal, so our bedroom's on the street side… our "backyard".   Every morning for the last month or so, Woody has used this utility pole outside our window to drum out what's apparently his courtship ritual.  Sometimes even on the metal.  He'll sing along too!

I read that the louder the noise a woodpecker makes the more it attracts the female.  He tries, but he's still up there alone every morning, so apparently something's not working real well for him.

We don't really mind this kind of alarm clock at all.  It's a lot better than the kind we used when we had to get to work.   Sometimes we just go back to sleep listening as he keeps trying.

 __________

This bird is about the size of a robin — so I'm guessing maybe a red-bellied woodpecker, because the red goes all the way down the back of his head.  (There are woodsy areas in the wetlands behind the houses across the street from us.)

** Do go visit Dave at WORLD BIRD WEDNESDAY  – admire his pictures and read what he has to say (it is always worthwhile)  and so are the links to other wonderful bird blogs.

We appreciate all visitors and commenters! Thank you.

  1. Nice share you have today. Old Salt would be in heaven with this bird around. He can’t get enough of our winged creatures.

  2. Sallie,I love your Re-bellied! I have have one drumming here but recently stopped so maybe he got lucky.

  3. Great shots of the Red-bellied Woodpecker doing his thing Sallie!

  4. Just beautiful!

  5. Beautiful captures of this Red-bellied Woodpecker. I love them, but around here, they have been known to be quite naughty, for it is very difficult to convince them that we have a two acre woods filled with possible holes for a home, and not to make one on our house, which has treated lumber, as well, as bug spraying once a month, just loves our home;'(~

  6. What great shots, Sallie! Woodpeckers are so much fun to watch, and, yes, to listen to.

  7. He’s a beauty!

  8. I love woodpeckers. We had a lot of them in our yard when we lived in Mississippi. I haven’t seen any here in Toronto though. Thanks for the photos! 🙂

  9. Oh what fun for you. I too have birds that are very noisy just before sunrise. They wake me up, put a smile on my face and I sleep on the happier for the wake-up call.

  10. Maybe there just aren’t any female woodpeckers around!!! Could it be that simple??

  11. Beautiful shots of this splendid bird, Sallie. We don’t have woodpeckers here in Australia, so I am fascinated by your description of their behaviour.
PS: Many thanks for your kind comment on my blog. I have man, many photos and I just want to share some of the history and beauty fo our nation with rest of the world! Your interest is appreciated 🙂

  12. Wow!! Beautiful mosaic as is your alarm clock Sallie, how adorable and cute 🙂

  13. I could sleep right through that alarm clock. Nice collage.

  14. Beautiful bird and thanks for sharing!

  15. Poor fellow, – I’m glad he lives in hope and that you don’t discourage his efforts, Sallie.

  16. Excellent shots, we have a couple who live at my folks house in Tennessee..:-)

  17. Yup…red bellied..male has all red head and the female has red nick and top of her head is just gray…

  18. Great woodpecker shots – we had one wake us up a few times recently, trying to drill into our stucco!
Colorado certainly has changeable weather, but it’s actually lovely most of the time. It can get cold in the winter, but we get around 300 sunny days a year where we live!

  19. Fun that we both have the same alarm clock. You took some great shots.

  20. Better than a rooster. We have one that bangs on our metal down spout. Silly birds. Love the shots!

  21. We have some woodpeckers here, too, and they also drum on poles (and sometimes houses!) But they are not red-bellied ones. Thanks for showing me a new bird!

  22. Great shots and story about the red-bellied woodpecker!

  23. he’s a good looking fellow, I hope the love of his life shows up soon

  24. I wouldn’t mind waking to the sounds of a woodie. Great mosiac and photos, Sallie!

  25. Woodpeckers can certainly make a racket, can’t they? We can sometimes hear them here but have to patient to see where they are – usually hight up in the trees. We once had an amorous male who took pleasure in beating his love song on the side of our cedar house.

  26. Woody the Woodpecker! Remember that cartoon and comic book series!!
    You have your very own!

    Bless you Sallie!
If you have a deaf ear such as I, all you’d have to do is push your good ear into the pillow and walla! Silence!

  36. I agree-I love the sound of a cockerel crowing in the country, however early. The dawn chorus starts about 04-00 at home.
