Monument Valley is a Navajo Tribal Park.   Located on the Colorado Plateau, it extends into Arizona and Utah. The awe-inspiring natural formations range from 100 to 1,500 feet tall.

 The absorbent sandstone holds underground aquifers which provides moisture to crops and grazing for animals.  Corn and sheep have always been most important.

It is easy to see how the majestic scenery served as inspiration for creating the art — pottery  and handwoven rugs —  for which the Navajo are well-known.

    Incredible really. So unlike I think any other area on Planet Earth. The water business is interesting. I would have thought nothing would grow in this area or be grazed here. Spinifex bushes and camels, only could survive. In desert areas here, spinifex thrives and so do snakes, the deadly types. Makes you really appreciaten how much the early pioneers endured when trekking from the Atlantic side to the Pacific. They were certainly of strong stock.
    Great blog of history and the environment. Thanks for the great lessons.

    Weather report: 8.15am Tuesday 17th July. After a full day of sunshine yesterday, yes the sun does shine here! Rain again last night and a battle royal above at the moment, the sun verses the rainy clouds. C’mon sunshine! ha ha
