WALKING WITH WOODPECKERS

Woodpeckers seem to love Upriver this time of year!  The morning walks last week were not so much about exercise as about chasing them……stopping every few steps  to marvel at these flashes of bright red and occasionally trying to take their picture.

2013-05-10

I'm pretty sure that the ones on the left and on the picnic table are red-bellied woodpeckers. The top one is a pileated and the other two are red-headeds (a new bird for me).

I'll keep chasing these beauties as long as they (and we) are here.  The perfect picture remains to be taken.  Meanwhile it's fun trying.  (And I can always go for another walk in the evening, for exercise!)

FOR:  WILD BIRD WEDNESDAY, thank you to Stewart for hosting.

We appreciate all visitors and commenters! Thank you.

  3. Dearest Sallie,
Oh, I missed soe of your posts. I wish I knew how I can follow you like I can see your post in my dashboard.
How wonderful to see these lovely red headed woodpeckers♡♡♡ Thank you very much for the beautiful pictures, my friend.
Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*

  4. You are blessed to have so many different Woodpeckers in your area~

  5. They are so beautiful ! One of them (a French kind !) stay in my garden when I lived in Alsace. I like too, listening to their noise when walking in the forests. I never saw one of them here.

  6. While you chase the perfect picture, you can appreciate the birds and the longer it takes to succeed, the longer the dishes can stay in the sink since it is so much more important to grab your camera and rush outdoors.

  7. A perfect way to exercise, Sallie.

  8. Pretty guys and girls to capture!
My red-headed self has never yet seen a Red-headed Woodpecker so I’m envious of your catch. 🙂
I wonder if Mrs. is sitting on the picnic table for Mr. to bring something back?

  9. Great photos, and what a nice collection of woodpeckers 🙂 They are beautiful birds!
In the little wood by my house we often see and hear woodpeckers, and they also come by the birds’ feeding station in my garden. Always fun to see them.

  10. bei uns hat der Specht ganz andere Farben Sallie
LG vom katerchen dar sich über DEINEN Specht gefreut hat

  11. Wonderful shots! They really are pretty birds. 🙂

  12. Hi Sallie and thanks for visiting my blog during my absence in Menorca. I didn’t have full computer access on holiday so wasn’t able to visit Blogger pals at the time but I’m now in the process of catching up with everyone. Your ID seems to be spot on and good luck in chasing those woodpeckers, most of which are very colourful, often with shades of red. Strange when all they need to achieve is to blend in with the colours in trees and leaves?

  13. Woodpeckers are delightful to watch and pretty to look at- but oh so hard to photograph. Nicely done Sallie!
    be well n happy ~:)

  14. Your IDs are correct. How cool that you were able to photograph all three of these beautiful woodies. The red-headed is my fave due to the distinctive blocks of color. Beautiful job!

  15. Wood peckers are beautiful. And mother nature was so kind to get them to make so much noise that we can always find them. Thanks MF.

  16. What a wonderful collection. We have no woodpeckers of any sort in Australia.
I think any bird that was black and white had a good chance of being called a Magpie back in the “good old days”! We have magpie larks and a Magpie Goose – neither of which are crows!

  18. Great photos, congrats on the life bird!

  19. Wonderful red variations. Birds are tough for me to photograph.

  20. Beautiful collection of woodpeckers. You photographed them so well.

  21. Such lovely birds they are!! Glad you shared them with us.

  22. I’ve always thought woodpeckers are cool.

  23. Dina J

Beautiful catch on all! Those red headeds are fairly rare to see.

  24. Sallie, I love all your woodpeckers. I wish I could see the Redhead woodie around here. Cool mosaic!

  25. Lovely shots Sallie, very pretty these birds, and the red is so bright you couldn’t miss them.

  26. Very nice photos!
Where we are camped right now, there are woodpeckers of the red headed variety all over the place. They make holes in everything available and then cram a single acorn into each hole!

  27. Such a nice assortment of woodpeckers. I am yet to get a decent shot of a Red-headed, so I’m envious!

  28. A great series. Beautiful birds to see on your walk.

  29. Wow, so many different woodpeckers! So nice to se them. I’ve only seen one sort here in Sweden and not so very often either!
Thanks a lot for the birthday greeting, Sallie!
    Hugs Pia

  30. What fun to find all three species … I’m lucky if one shows itself briefly amongst all the foliage!

  31. These birds are so colourful! In the Netherlands our birds don’t such striking colours.
Thanks for your visits. It is understandable that you can’t tell what gender a baby is. She is my second granddaughter. She is a funny little thing, and all the family is spoiling her!

  32. Great selection!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.

  33. Oh wow! How great to see and get shots of all three!
