A VERY SMALL TOWN

We took a drive out into the country last week when we visited  Clarkston Washington, the town where we grew up and graduated from high school.

Clarkston isn't a big town at all, but it's a little larger than Anatone, a nearby farming community.   Anatone has never been very much of a town…. when I was a child, my dad would always say that it took more time to say 'Anatone Washington' than it took to drive through it.

Bill and I hadn't been back to our old home town and the surrounding countryside  for nearly a decade and this sign was there back then.

Anatone hasn't grown any … in fact, I'm pretty sure 38 is probably on the high side, at least for the town limits.

There used to be a school, but it has consolidated with another town.  And the few stores that were here are mostly boarded up.

Like in many farming communities everywhere, people would rather get in their cars and shop in the nearest malls.

  1. How funny

  2. Very cute sign! How often do you think it gets updated? 🙂

  3. This sign is really too funny ! I suppose there are more cats now then 17, lol !
Thank you so much for all your comments on my holidays !

  4. Love, love the sign.
Malls are great, but, they, and interstate highways, have taken so much out of small towns, especially rural ones.

  5. But I heard a kitten is born. It is now 18.

  6. More animals than people! Love it.

  7. but how many rabbits?

  8. This little town looks as if it is hanging on to its identity and offering a slower pace of life. Sounds wonderful.

  9. Sallie, neat sign. There are almost as many dogs as there are people. A nice look back at your home town. Have a happy day!

  10. Dearest Sallie,
Oh, it must have been wonderful to go back where you used to live or the town where located close by. At first I smiled to see even the numbers of the animals. But reading you post, made me think my own city. When I was young, my mother always sent me to the small various stores near our house saying like “go to the meat store and pick up the one I ordered yesterday” Payment was later with the lump sum for a month. And the owners were sweet people. Our city have 2 big malls both east and west end. Life style keeps changing and kind of funny I feel old to reminisce about old human contacts (^^;)
Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan to my dear friend in America, xoxo Miyako*

  11. i love, love, love that sign!

  12. This is the funniest sign I ever saw! I start the day with a smile!

  13. Only 38 people in a town!? It’s a really small town. I would love to visit this town.

  14. That is an awesome sign!! Love that they included dogs, cats and horses in the population – maybe trying to boost their numbers lol. I’ve never seen anything like this. Thanks for sharing! Gotta love small towns.

  15. That sign is just too funny, Sallie!

  16. WOW, Im thinking of relocating, maybe this would be the right spot…then they would have to add one more to the people and 2 more to the dogs list! LOVE IT.

  17. Looks like the animal population is greater than the people!

  18. I find it so sad that these little communities are no longer as viable as once they were. Small communities have so many benefits for the population. Everyone knows everyone else and is willing to help in the winking of an eye. The motor car has a lot to answer for. We tend to rush off to far away places just because we can, searching for we don’t know what

  19. it looks like there is room for announcements – but sadly all 38 people are not up to not much 😉
I don’t know why you have so much trouble with the linky (I do as well whenever I try to ‘fix’ it….. so it’s not just you. I think you may have to just link to your blog and not the specific post?

  20. There is something so sad about schools closing. Not being able to go back and see the school. My grammar school is still going strong, and my high school has gone from being sort of a central office thing, to being a middle school. It’s so poignant to drive by and remember days.

  21. Too funny. That’s the smallest town I’ve ever heard of.

  22. That’s fun.

  23. Love this sign, which reminds me of the one that greets folks entering Portales, New Mexico: “Welcome to Portales, home of 12,000 friendly people and three or four old grouches.”
Sally, I was glad to hear your family is all safe in the recent awful flooding in Colorado (and New Mexico, too).

  24. Sort of sad, but yes a trip to the mall or wal-mart is how most people shop now days.

  25. I had to giggle at what your dad used to say! 😉
I think it’s great that they counted the animals.

  26. Oh that is hilarious. I suppose it’s easy to count everyone including the pets since it’s a very small town. Love it!

  27. I love that sign! They probably don’t update it when someone gets a new pet!

  28. I love that sign Sallie. We drove through some small towns, one had a population of 18. It said, “18 darned nice people live here.”

  29. oh, that is too cute!

  30. A funny sign! It must be an interesting place to visit.

  31. A great sign that also describes the scene! Anatone must have been like a hamlet or village.
