SHADES OF SKY WHILE EAGLE WATCHING

Note:  If ads are showing up on this post, I apologize… I didn't put them there and I will be checking in with Typepad to see what's going on.

Earlier this month I spent a couple of late-afternoon hours near our local eagle nest.  I got a few halfway decent pictures with eagles (this post) and even more without them.

I focused on the scrub pine where the nest is, waiting for someone to come home.  (The Eagle cam is attached to the trunk on the left.)

Most of the Eagle pictures on the other post were taken between this picture and the one beneath.  The starlings set up a huge racket as they settled onto these branches for the night.

Both eagles were sitting only a few yards away from the 'starling tree', but they paid no attention to them.

I don't know if there is safety in numbers for the starlings or if they just aren't worth it as food for the eagles.    Sometimes the eagles bring in egrets or gulls to the nest as well as fish.

The sun was starting to go down.  I love the golden skies we get sometimes … sunrise and sunset.

It was almost dark as I headed for the car. Below is one of the eagles silhouetted above the nest.

Both eaglets seem to be doing fine now after the difficult start.  Both are being fed.

  1. I love those bird cams. I’ve been watching peregrine falcons on the cathedral in Norfolk.

  2. Oh, I long to see beautiful blue skies! I am so glad both eaglets are doing well.

  3. brave little starlings… I love the eagle silhouette Sallie!

  4. Good boys (or girls) these two eaglets ! Wonderful shots as usual, Salie ! Thank you !

  5. Beautiful pics. I love seeing Eagles. I love the eagle cam.

  6. Dearest Sallie;
Great pictures of Shades of Sky with eagles and starlings☆☆☆ The only a flight of birds we can see is crows(^^;) And of course, I was atracted by the diffrent shape of the pine tree.
    Love you always, xoxo Miyako*

  7. Terrific series of shots. Love the tree loaded with birds! So sweet!

  8. Beautiful! Like that starling tree!

  9. Wow! Look at those birds!
They seem to be having some kind of discussion!

  10. Nice photos!!

  11. I love the cluster of the starlings on that tree and the orange of the skies. I could almost hear the ruckus in my mind as I glanced through the tree picture, definitely must have been quite noisy there!

  12. The scrub pine photos are my favourite!

  13. Fantastic pictures!

  14. Love the starling tree!!

  15. Whew…both being fed

  16. Wonderful shots. I like that view of birds on the tree.

  17. These starling are everywhere. They cover the trees and wires around here. Also, make loud noises.

  18. Well, I’ve seen starlings (though not managed a picture like yours!) but eagles are few and far between around here. I wait in eternal hope. And log on to eagle cams 🙂

  19. what an exciting series of pics! I would be thrilled to live near where eagles were nesting.

  20. Nice images at your eagle watch. I have not been able to get out for the past few days, between waiting for repairmen and lots of rain. Maybe tomorrow, as I am anxious to see our two eaglets as they are now very visible above the nest rim.

  21. Always love the eagles, but that tree full of starlings is amazing!! Terrific captures, Sallie, as always and thanks for sharing!! Hope you and the birds have a great weekend!!!

  22. Great shots. The starling covered tree is incredible.

  23. Sallie,
All the tree portraits are a wonderful contrast to those beautiful blue and amber skies, but the shot of those starlings, sitting on sections of the bare branched tree, like the ‘starling social event of the year’, stands out the most! What a sight!

  24. These are really neat photos. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that many starlings assembled on one tree like that. Maybe they’re just not worth the hassle for the eagles to snag. Or maybe they don’t taste good. Haha. Glad to know the eaglets doing so well. Thanks for all the updates. 🙂

  25. I don’t remember having seen an Eagle here around ! Beautiful pictures !

  26. lol, strange kind of leafs on the starling tree. Don´t you think. 🙂

  27. It would be hard for the eagle to pick out a starling for din-din from the bunch 🙂 Great captures.

  28. I love seeing your view of the eagles! We had a tree full of cedar waxwings yesterday. They were fun to watch. Enjoy your day….hope the sun comes out later! Hugs!

  29. Oh, I love that bouquet of starlings and the silhouettes of the eaglets.

  30. I do hope you’re warm. The birds in our area are having a tough winter.

  31. A fun post, Sallie. I can just imagine sitting there and watching the sky change from sunrise to sunset with all those birds to keep you company. And you do have an eagle eye!

  32. that is fantastic! How wonderful to live close to this and get to see it in person.

  33. Wow the Starling tree is amazing and the size of the eagles nest too. Love the colourful sky.

  34. Sallie, lovely shots of the trees and sky! It is neat to watch the eagles at their nest. Wow, so many starlings. Wishing you a happy day and weekend ahead.

  35. Hi Sallie, I’m glad both Eaglets are doing well, hopefully they will both survive to adulthood and raise Eaglets of their own.
Great shot of the Starlings tree!
    Warm hugs 🙂

  36. Very nice – I love that moss-covered tree at sunset. That’s so tropical!

  37. I’d love to be in Florida right about now! We used to have an eagle cam at our local botanical garden, but now the eagles are discouraged from nesting there–too close to the airport. Lovely shots. Starlings are certainly like community living, don’t they?

  38. the eagles are always neat, but that starling tree was awesome!

  39. Your series of photos was just outstanding. I still think the aggressive eaglet is a male.
