MEW GULLS and ARCTIC TERN

(As promised, still blogging about our Alaska summer trip, even though it ended in early September.)

Above — this handsome bird (I'm pretty sure an Arctic Tern), posed beautifully along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail in Anchorage.

And here's another tern sleeping right through Mother Mew Gull's lesson for the day.  (Doesn't she just look as if she's giving those kids a lecture?)

If  this brood is any kind of example of how healthy they are, the species is definitely not in 'danger of being endangered.'

We've seen an awful lot of Gulls in our lifetime, but realized here that we'd never before seen Gull babies.

They weren't happy at all when mom flew off.  Lots and lots of plaintive baby gull noises.  (Come on kids, I'm sure she's just going out to get some lunch for you!)

  19. The Arctic Tern is so cute, it looks much more reserved than the noisy gulls. I’ve never seen this size of baby gulls either, they must be hard to keep fed, poor mom.

  20. They’re so cute! I’ve never seen babies, either.

  24. First of all Sallie I do remember those old B&W westerns. In fact the Lone Ranhger was a childhood hero. So I know all about the “buzzards” and that is why for North Amercan readers, I attached the scientific name Buteo buteo as posting pictures of our only UK buzzard invites some perplexed comments.
Ah, Mew Gull – you mean Common Gull? LOL.

  25. I’ve never seen gull babies or tern babies either! Wonderful photos!

  26. Very cool that you’ve seen and photographed an Arctic Tern. Sometimes they show up here but I have never seen one to photograph.

  27. I had never seen baby gulls either – they are so sweet. I’ll come back and look on your series on Alaska. We also went to Alaska several years ago – I wrote a couple of posts, then went on to other subjects. I still have pictures and more posts to write such as the railroad to the Yukon. Thanks for coming to my blog.

  28. Is she looking after a whole kindergarden?? I have never seen any gull have that many chicks. It is nice to see that we do share some birds like the Arctic tern that often spends it’s winter on our sunny summer coasts.

  29. oh those babies are adorable! 🙂

  31. I guess the baby gulls were starving! It is amazing to get so close to them-they seem oblivious to humans.
(Today, the weather has turned wet and wintry for the first time this season, but I had a young fox in the garden last evening).

  32. Love the first Artic Tern shot. Now I think the baby Gulls are being home schooled by a teacher! This Gull would not had so many baby of her own!! Looks like they are all listening to her anyway. Great post. Have a great weekend.

  33. cool shots of the gull. Yes the gull was probably teaching them a thing or two. 🙂
