THE CRITTER THAT KILLED MY CAMERA ….

A Flashback Friday post  –  back to last October.

I heard a sort of small hissy noise one evening last Fall as I was walking down the road near the RV Park. We had just returned from our Alaska trip and I didn't think people-eating wildlife would be a problem at all now that we were back in the northwest.   But I wondered about that noise and of course I stopped and looked around.

And then I saw this little crawfish almost right under my shoe.  (He was about four inches long — the photos make him seem much bigger, I know.)   The feisty little fellow was doing his level best to scare me away.

I wondered where he came from since we had never seen crawfish around the Lake before.  I  kept taking pictures while thinking about how to get the poor thing across the road to the small runoff stream that was the nearest water.

But he wasn't having any of my help — every time I would bend down  to get closer he'd wave that threatening claw.  It couldn't have killed me — but I hate pain — and of course had nothing with me except my camera.

Then I decided to take a picture without the zoom lens — to show exactly how tiny this scary little creature was — and that was when I found that my zoom lens was stuck as far out as it could go. I think he threw sand at my camera.  Nothing I did could make it retract!  I forgot all about saving the crawfish and headed home.

As it turned out, the person in our house who can do stuff couldn't get it to go back either, so we returned the camera (it was still under warranty).  I used an old one for the rest of the time we were in the northwest and while we were in Colorado.    It came back shortly after we got to Florida (we had it sent here) and is  working fine so far.

Bill wondered where on earth I'd been when he looked at these pictures  (we couldn't look at them until we got the repaired camera back) — and for a few minutes I couldn't remember this little adventure either!

I was just very glad that I did not meet up with this camera-eating critter while we were in Alaska — because I sure wouldn't have wanted to take pictures of those bears and bison without my long lens!

  7. What a tale…. But I love the little guy

  8. What a tale, Sallie. As long as one is armed with a camera, there is a story to tell.

  9. That little critter wasn’t scared of you one bit.

  10. Those pics are impressive, they look as if they’re right in front of me. Hah what a brave little creature eh?

  12. Great looking animal – and he does look a lot bigger than you say he was. We have similar species here – we call them Yabbies.

  13. A strange and wonderfull story !In French we say that “les petites bêtes ne mangent pas les grosses” (something like “the little beasts don’t eat the big ones”) but here, I learnt that they can kill a camera… A good lesson !

  14. Wow, a terrific finding.
A critter that killed a camera.
    The critter won.

  15. Quite scary looking critter up close. I wonder what he was doing there walking on the road?

  16. Ah, the fabled one-clawed camera eating monster.
Good thing he only took your camera…this time!

  17. I did not know these little critters would walk down the road. What an unexpected encounter and an unlikely result from such a little guy.

  18. What a story! 🙂 Great photos – absolutely worth to take a little risk!

  19. He is a feisty little fellow! Hope he found his way and glad you got your camera back!

  20. I love the boardwalk in the previous post, and this little creature is cute! My first digital camera (a point-and-shoot) died half-way around Devil’s Tower in Wyoming!

  21. Poor little guy with his missing claw. Looks like he escaped a bird. As a kid, I caught these guys by hand and chucked them back in the creek. I’m sure he found his way home after the big scary camera went home. At least I hope so.

  22. can´t help but giggling. That was quite a story 🙂

  23. Little bugger. My brother is a lobster fisherman and they call lobsters bugs because of the way they crawl on the ocean floor and look like mutant bugs.

  24. Up close it is very frightening…and like you I don’t like pain!

  25. He certainly meant business! Sorry to hear about your camera but sand and camera do not go together! Have a lovely weekend.

  26. menace to photographers! pretty cute and glad your camera is repaired!

I didn’t know those little beasties could hiss! I’m glad your camera didn’t break while away, the same thought I had when mine gave up the ghost last month. Mind you, I always have my point and shoot for back up.

  28. Great story! Back in the days of film I would sometimes find photos on a roll that I couldn’t initially remember taking! Maybe that’s ’cause I’m losing my memory? Great photos of this little guy. He was probably scared to death of that black thing in your hand!

ha! it would be a funnier story…if your camera didn’t break! well, it IS funny though.”The Crawdaddy that Threw Sand at My Lens” 🙂

  30. Wow, on some of your photos this crawfish looks like a huge creature..Hissing and throwing sand, it was a meanie..Sorry about your camera but I am glad you have it back now.. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. have a happy weekend!

  31. Oh, what a story – sorry tale! Glad you got your camera back. I don’t think sand is covered under warranty. To pick up critters like that, wave something in front of it that attracts it’s attention while picking it up from behind where the nippers won’t get you.
I’m still chuckling at your exploits.

  32. Even though you said it was little I wouldn’t want to try to move one of these guys either. It makes some good pictures though.

  33. My goodness, a scary looking creature. Aren’t you glad he wasn’t any bigger and it was only your camera he was after!!!!

  34. What an unusual critter to find hissing at you. But I can’t believe you’d blame it for breaking your camera. Too funny. Glad you got your camera back in working order.
