AN ORDINARY MORNING

Come with me on an ordinary walk around the neighborhood.

Morning arrived with  a sudden blaze of gold.

There were a few robins on the golf course lawn, the same area where the Sandhill Cranes (here) hung out in January.  The Cranes have gone on to other places.  And although the robins probably  seem more ordinary to almost all of you, the Sandhills are actually a more usual bird around here.  In fact, this is the very first time that we have seen Robins  in Florida.  (Now, if  daffodils would somehow suddenly start to bloom here, it would seem like a real Spring here in the land of endless summer.)

As always, Mockingbirds are everywhere.  This time of year, their varied songs often serve as our morning wake up call.  It's a nice way to start the day.

Almost home from the walk, I stopped to talk with  our cross-street neighbor.  His house backs up onto wetlands (where ours backs on to the Canal).  There's a nest of Turkey Vultures just behind his yard.   He is worried because his  adorable calico cat likes to explore a little and  sleep (a lot) in the yard.  (She is on a long leash).  Now he is afraid to let her outside unless he is sitting right there.  I think the Vultures can probably distinguish between a sleeping cat and one that is no longer alive.    But I'm not positive.

  1. Lots to appreciate on your walk ; I particularly love your sunrise!

  2. I’m sure they know the difference between live and dead! I don’t think they kill things, just eat the dead ones.

  3. This is beautiful and much appreciated and needed today.. Thank you Sallie

  4. Such a wonderful life you live! Extra- ordinary, methinks.

  5. It wasn’t an ordinary walk at all. You saw a lot of beautiful things and took great photos of them. Very nice!

  6. Your morning iis so peaceful! I also had a robin in my garden. I hardly could see it. He was so small.Have a peaceful day Sallie!

  7. That Vulture and cat thing is a bit scary.

  8. Turkey Vultures locate their food by smell, so the snoozing cat should be perfectly safe.

  9. Thanks for sharing your walk with us and what you saw.

  10. Dear Sallie, I didn’t see your painting so cannot comment on that – not that it would matter seeing as how I’m not an art critic. I’m kinda critical in a perverse medical sense, but that’s another story.
Nevertheless, I just wanted to let you know it was definitely the wine. One cannot drink wine and do art. Unless of course, you’re into modern art, then you can drink all you want and no one would ever be the wiser. “Gee that red line just speaks to me in a profound way!” 🙂

  11. An “ordinary” day can none the less be “extraordinary” depending upon your state of mind and eye for beauty, as you prove in this post. By the way, during the 12 years that we have lived in south Florida we have never seen a robin on our property, and never one on a lawn as is so common up east. During a few winters I have seen them in the wetlands singly or in small flocks, and once in a flock containing sever hundred individuals.

  12. I think birds know when something is dead, however, I would take care of my cat also if I had one. We habe a hungry hawk hanging around here so I go out with the dogs.

  13. That’s a lovely morning walk. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a mocking bird before. In the UK our robins are smaller than your US ones. I hope your neightbour’s cat is safe – I would worry too. I remember a couple of magpies coming close to taunt my elderly sleeping cat. I thought they were just being mischievous but read some time later that magpies attack and go for the eyes to render the larger animal defenceless. And I was sitting right alongside him when they came over. Never did feel quite the same way about our magpies after that!

  14. I enjoyed your ordinary morning which is extraordinary to others.

  15. I love coming along with you on your walks, Sallie – if only virtually. These are all such uplifting photos.

  16. You have a lovely neighborhood to walk through with interesting birds, and that bunny was so cute. Thanks for sharing it.

  17. What a burst of colour to wake up to – our sky was purple this morning.
I stayed at a hotel/resort called Pinetrees on Lord Howe – it was wonderful and the food was great. There is a reasonable range accommodation on the island, although I don’t think there is any camping at all! I quick Google of Pintrees and Lord Howe Island will get you full details.

  18. What a great “ordinary” walk – you live in a very pretty place. And thanks for the congratulations as I’m ready for a change like this; I won’t be working from home for long as we’re spinning off a startup company which will be based here in CO.

  19. That bunny is just perfect for March as in ‘hare’ and Easter I believe is this month this year also. And your birds…the robin…perfect for Spring.

  20. A great walk and one that I would love to do to see some of your amazing wildlife.

  21. A gorgeous early morning view!

  22. An ordinary day, you say, … but filled with so many lovely moments filling my heart with joy !
Thank you for sharing all these natural wonders, my darling Sallie, have a wonderful remainder of your week, sending much love to you, with boundless thankfulness
    Dany

  23. I’m starting to hear more birds in the morning. It’s so welcome after a very quiet winter. – Margy

  24. so many beautiful things to see on your walk….what a day, started nice, ended nice!!!

  25. Land of endless summer … that sounds like a great title for a book! Not only are you exploring your neighborhood, it seems as if you are exploring new ways to present your photos/journey in creative and fun ways. I like were the rabbit sits as part of the collage.

  26. Our daffodils are in bloom, no Robins on the ground yet tho…Love your bunny!! Have a great week, today Im going to get new brakes, so I can stop when I go!

  27. Thanks for taking us along on your walk. South Florida offers a plethora of fun during the winter. Funny, but we see very few robins, too. I wonder why that is. But I don’t think the vultures will bother the cat…unless, of course, they are very, very hungry. Nah, I’m just kidding. They clean up roadkill.

  28. I enjoyed my walk with you. What a great idea…may have to do that sometime too 😉 Have a wonderful week~

  29. Great photos and I like your description of an “ordinary” morning. It is really not so ordinary with all the beauty around. Thanks for sharing.

  30. there is so much beauty in the ordinary! i loved going on a walk with you! and robins are probably my favourite birds… have a beautiful week!

  31. A magical walk-I love to see all the birds and animals on your walk!

  32. Nice neighborhood walk.

  33. A lovely walk! Thanks for taking me along.

  34. I would like to go with you for a photowalk Sallie, i am sure it will be a very productive activity. That first photo looks like a big area beyond is really on real fire.

  35. I thought there was a fire! What a cool and peaceful walk about.

Hubby and I were just talking this morning about how much we enjoyed the mockingbird songs while in Florida and wish we had them in Ontario. I’ve heard they can become a nuisance and one day we stood watching one that sounded like a telephone ringing.
I don’t think the turkey vultures would go after the cat, as soon as it moved they’d be off, I found they spooked very easily by any kind of movement.

  37. Hi Sallie
I love seeing robins–they are sure harbingers of Spring! I’m not sure the vultures would bother a lve cat but I would not want to take a chance. All my cats have been happy indoor cats –less worry that way!

  38. Thanks for taking us on your walk! Lovely pictures. I don’t know if the turkey vultures would bother the cat, but one of my friends had an owl go after her small dog one evening around dusk. Thankfully the dog was on a leash and she was able to scare the owl away!

  39. The bunnies are all so sweet! Happy Monday!

  40. What a lovely photo walk with you ~ all photos are wonderful ~ especially like the bunny ~
Happy Week to you ~ ^_^

  41. Thank you Sally for linking the robin to SAEASONS – such a beautiful bird. Hope to see a robin where I live soon! Don’t know though if they come to 3000 feet to visit our yard? Have a happy week!

  42. How an ordinary morning can become extraordinary.

  43. I love starting my day to bird songs! In two or three more months I’ll be able to leave the windows open so I CAN start my day with songs!
    Linda

  44. Beautiful morning with lovely birds.

  45. Sounds and looks like a very nice ordinary morning!

  46. I love Gayle’s thought on this post! LOL Beautiful photos and I too love that sweet bunny in the center of that collage. Have a wonderful Monday.

  47. Can I count this walk as my exercise? Love the bunny collage.

  48. We are seeing lots of robins on the golf course now too. How nice to see such a variety of critters when we get outside for a walk. We went to 2 State Parks yesterday…what fun! Hugs, Diane

  49. Sallie, what a wonderful walk! Surrounded by Mother Nature at her best and a bunny in time for Easter!

  50. Hello Sallie, I enjoyed the walk, birds and scenery. I hope the vultures leave your neighbor’s cat alone. The bunny is adorable.
Happy Monday, enjoy your new week!
