  • SWAMP CREATURES

     

     Sharing some eerie scenery and creepy creatures from here in the swampland with SCENIC WEEKENDS and CAMERA CRITTERS.

     Gotta have an alligator or two….hey, it's Florida!

     Cormorants in the swamp have startled me more often than alligators have …the noise they make when they flap those wings can make you jump, since you hear it before you see the birds.

    We ran across a herd of feral hogs at Six Mile Cypress Swamp.   They're an invasive species and are found on farm lands in this area as well.  A ranger said that they will be "relocated" because the rampaging animals tear up and destroy habitat that is needed by native species.

  • CLOUDS TWO WAYS

    Gazing up at the clouds  with SKYWATCH FRIDAY participants and then down at some different ones with WEEKEND REFLECTIONS.

    This is  a typical late afternoon sky  on a warm January day in Southwest Florida.  Morning skies are often bright blue, without a cloud to be seen.   Afternoons are more interesting.  (And I still don't know what kind of clouds any of these are.)

    Another upside down sky from Six Mile Cypress.  The tiny floating water plants looked like green stars in the reflected sky.

  • UPSIDE DOWN, DOWNSIDE UP

     I've posted reflections from Six Mile Cypress Slough at least once every year since we've been coming to Fort Myers, but walking there — and taking pictures — is something we look forward to every year.  So here are the first reflections from the current season:

    Sometimes at the Slough, up and down kind of blend together.   The two pictures below are the same image.  I was thinking about sky reflections when I was looking at the download and rotated this image  just for fun — and now I'm honestly not real sure which is  straight out of the camera and which is the flipped one.

  • LISTEN TO THE TREES

     

    Good advice seen a couple of days ago at Six Mile Cypress Slough, one of our favorite places to walk here in Fort Myers:

    Wherever there is a good spot to get off the walkway  at Six Mile Cypress, there are posted words with even more food for thought.  

    Someone has done a wonderful job of choosing  quotes for the  signs.  And I'm sharing this one with other lovers of this form of the printed word at over at Lesley's SIGNS SIGNS (thank you!)

  • MONSTER SHADOW

           FOR SHADOW-SHOT SUNDAY over at Hey Harriet's AND RUBY TUESDAY by Mary The Teach at Work of the Poet.

     

    021-1 This metal alligator stands near the Six-Mile Cypress Slough Visitor Center.  I'm not sure if it is supposed to be a bicycle rack or a clmbing toy for kids. 

    In any case, the shadow shows its alligator shape better than the actual object does.

     There are always lot of shadows and reflections at the Slough.

    HERON Scenes from Six Mile Cypress Slough on a beautiful Florida February Day.  (Apologies to shivering family in Oregon Colorado and even Texas and friends "Up North.")

     I spied this little heron, but there weren't many birds; it may have  actually been too hot!  

    TURTLES

    But the Slough is always a great place to reflect — literally and figuratively. 

    And a stroll on the boardwalk is never a waste of time.
