RANDOM PHOTOS FROM A RANDOM EXCURSION

Although the travel planner of the house had an ultimate goal in mind for last month's excursion, getting there was random (just the way we like to travel, whether our road-trips are long or short).   So these are random pictures from what turned out to be three distinct parts to the trip.   (And also for a random assortment of mid-week memes — we may have limited internet access the rest of this week.)

First of all, we drove through the Big Cypress National Preserve stopping to walk about a little and take a few pictures (earlier post here).

This old building stands at a pullout spot on the edge of the park.  It seems like it ought to have a story.   But there is no information; it has looked exactly the same as long as we've been coming to the Everglades area.

For Signs Signs (one of two)

The smallest Post Office in the United States stands nearby.  I don't know who the woman and baby in the bottom picture are; they photo-bombed the picture, but I left them in because it shows how small the building really is.

From there, we decided to explore Key Largo.  An earlier post  (here) had a few pictures from the nice hotel we found when we got there.

For Wednesday Waters

Here are a few more shots from the lovely Key Largo beach.

The next morning, we headed to the goal for this trip — the big City of Miami.  We'd driven by a couple of times, but never spent any time in the City.   We had booked an apartment hotel downtown.  It was a great location — once we checked in we never drove the car again until we left — we were able to walk or take public transportation everywhere we wanted to go.

We had a great time in the City,  eating  excellent Ethnic Food, marveling at the Architecture  and people-watching.      Oddly however, my camera mostly seems to come out only when there are birds and animals around.

ForWild Bird Wednesday and   Good Fences

Our hotel was on a residential block that dead-ended at Biscayne Bay …. and dozens of ducks seemed to be making their home in neighborhood yards.  Every time we left the apartment or returned,  we were accompanied by a few neighbor families who waddled right along with us.

A neighbor (of the human variety) told us that the ducks usual flight pattern had been disrupted by the building of high rise condo towers, so they now just lived between this neighborhood and the water.   The young ones don't  know any different.   Being an urban duck is just normal for them.

Below is the only picture I took when we visited a waterfront shopping area.  (To get there, we hopped on a free tram on our corner and then onto the free monorail/people-mover … like what Airports have between terminals.  Excellent public transportation!  Wish we had something like that where we live.)

If you don't have any customers for your Face-Painting wagon, just paint your own face!

Satisfied with a job well done!

  4. Ha ha, photo-bombing…
That is a good way to be seen, at least, by me, who is a few thousands miles away.

  5. Hi Sallie!
First I say thank you for your last comment in my blog!
I am not so much out surfing these days, and I´m sorry I haven´t written back to you!
Interesting photos uou´ve taken, I find a bit of sadness to see the first old house and the man who painted his own face is also a bit sad! Nice with the beach and birds though.
Wish you a nice weekend! Regards Pia

  6. cute ducks, amazing that they’ve adapted so well to their flight patterns being disrupted

  7. Love the post office. Saw one about 1/4 that size in Puerto Cito Mexico. Random travel is the best. Well, unless you’re a duck and can fly. 😉

  8. CUTE little Post Office–love it:) Speaking of love, love your duck photos too!
What fun to travel to so many neat locales!
    Blessings, Aimee

  9. Great shots of the old building and the tiny post office. Interesting to know it’s history. Your Miami visit sounds wonderful. I like the urban ducks. The face painter is a terrific, colorful image.

  10. That is a neat old building. It would be cool to learn it’s history. – I loved all the baby ducks. How fun to “paint your own face” when business is slow

  11. This is so fun!

  12. That post office is charming!

  13. fun stuff, i enjoyed the clown and the little ducklings!!!!!

  14. Seventy years ago, Dad led a logging crew that worked some the areas in your photos. Farms and people were displaced by the conversion of the land into national parks. This is true across the south and west, which is why some resentment still exists toward the federal government today.
To obtain an idea of what the South looked like before the feds stepped in you might want to read John Muir’s Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf.

  15. thanks, sallie! 🙂

  16. I enjoyed all the photos, but especially the fence with the ducklings!

  17. Such an intriguing wander in your world. Your mini post office looks a bit like our mini telephone exchange in Tasmania at Liena. And Key Largo waters look delightful in the gentle light.

  18. Looks like you had a nice visit. Love the mini-Post Office.

  19. Oh my…..love all the ducks Sallie…

  20. Looks like a great excursion!

  28. Love your duck neighbours, Sallie!

  29. I love all your photos…and I think the Face Painter is adorable..:)

  30. Love this post! Fun little post office and clown! Beautiful views of the beach & ocean and the ducks! Looks like you had an amazing trip!

  31. The old building and the tiny post office are particularly fascinating. Liked the face painter– he can’t make any money doing his own face but it is a legitimate advertising expense. I wonder how much he charges himself for the service 🙂

  32. How gorgeous! And congrats on the boundless energy and zest for life and nature, that you both have.
Bon voyage, if you are off for the summer.

  33. I love the sunset shot in your last post. The end of the line!

Dearest Sallie; It sure is surprising that the smallest Post Office in the United States used to be the irrigation pip shed 🙂 Oh! How I LOVE to see the cute ducklings waddling together♡♡♡ Sweet to see that the little ones peaking through the fence p:-) I’ve never seen Face-Painting wagon or these painting being done (just on TV spectators of spots p:-) I wondered if the guy painted his face in order to attract customer(^_^) Night Night from Japan♪
Sending Lots of Love and Hugs to my Dear friend in America, xoxo Miyako*

  38. I love the cute ducklings!

  39. Love the ducks!

  40. What fun to see these photos, Sallie. Thank you for sharing them while you could. Really nice.
Oh, how I love the ducklings. There seems to be several varieties of them and they reminded me of a time that we never saw geese here in the winter months as they, too, have become urban geese.
    Enjoy.

  41. I need to catch up after I leave this comment. Looks like you are having a wonderful time. Love all those little fuzzy duck babies. The face painting guy hopefully has some better days. 🙂
Thanks so much for checking in with me. So sweet of you. I am doing better just not fully me quite yet but things are going well.

  42. Lovely range of colors in this post and the sepia building is gorgeous.
I love the close-up of the duck, and the family of duckies, the fence and the face painting person – that’s actually fun, except when one grows a beard, it can be tough to paint such a face – may be just the nose? 🙂
    Have a Wonderful Day!
    Peace 🙂

  43. That looks like a great place, and that post office is remarkable!

  44. A great collection of photos. I told Lois Anne the other day that I’d like to travel the state taking photos of old, abandoned buildings. Thanks for sharing.

  45. What a nice beach holiday. The ocean looks great, and I would really enjoy seeing all the ducks waddling back and forth. The free transportation looks like a wonderful thing for a tourist area. I remember the nice transportation for Expo 86.

  46. I spent some time in Key Largo over a decade ago. It was great fun!
    Love your pics, Sallie.
