MORE FROM OUR PALM BEACH VISIT

A couple of Ibis guard the waters from a Boardwalk railing (fence?).    The sign (below right) might lead you to expect to be climbing a steep mountain soon.

But we are used to flat-land Florida by now and the sign couldn't fool us.   Even at our advanced ages, we managed to hike up this "elevation" without even using the rail   (and without even breathing hard).  We did 'perspire' a little, but that was because of the heat, not the exertion.     Seriously, note the handrail on the left of the bottom picture –  I didn't notice any elevation gain then and I don't see it here!  It's all relative I guess -  we are from the Pacific Northwest where a change in elevation usually means more than "climbing" a few steps higher than sea level.

We watched from poolside as the Christmas full moon rose.    These aren't the best moon shots I've ever taken — the tiki lights at the Palm Beach hotel pool bar and the city lights in the distance were a little distracting.  But it was a beautiful evening!  Sometimes I still have to pinch myself to believe that it is the end of December and we can actually sit outside late into the evening enjoying dinner al fresco.

  1. I thought the “change in elevation” sign was amusing as well! 🙂 When I had my macular surgery two 1/2 years ago I was told I could not change my elevation because of the temporary gas bubble in my eye while I as healing so I couldn’t drive south of here to see my friend near Benson because they live at a higher elevation. Usually here the elevation change means a trip into the mountains, so that was an interesting reminder that sometimes elevation can be subtle and tricky! 🙂 But in a flat wetlands…hmmm. 🙂

  2. I have to say I like your rather cynical take on that sign – many of these are just daft!
Hope the New Year is starting well.

  3. Glad you are back in warmer climes safely. I hope you will not be affected by the flooding I’ve seen on TV in other states.

  24. A strange year and a beautiful long evening in december. Happy New Year to you and yours!

  25. Beautiful images from the trip.

  26. That’s like the Flemish part in Belgium it is so flat like a pancake and when there is a hill they call it mountain !

  27. That’s a very pretty area. Living in Colorado, the change in elevation sign made me laugh. Have a wonderful 2016!

  28. awesome moon captures!! i enjoy seeing the ibis, we don’t see them here!!! happy 2016!!!

  29. You are really catching the cranes, Sallie. I just a few moments ago read that there were more Sandhill Cranes spotted migrating this Fall over our area than in the past. I guess change in elevation is all relative. 🙂 Snow and cold here today, which is typical of New Year’s Eve.
Best wishes for you and yours as the New Year arrives.

  30. The collage of the moons is breathtaking, Sallie and the Sandhill Cranes are a fantastic visual treat as well. I like using handrails, with or without a change in inclination 🙂
Happy New Year to you and yours!
    Peace 🙂

  31. Great photos, Sallie. That boardwalk looks like a pleasant, albeit strenuous, walk. Lol I like the moon shots. Have a happy new year.

  32. thanks, sallie!

  33. Hello Sallie, Cute sign! I love the Sandhill Cranes and your moon images. Gorgeous! I wish you all the best in 2016, a Happy, Healthy New Year!

  34. Lovely shots! And you’re right – teenagers do need more space! Wishing you a wonderful year ahead.

  35. I’m pinching myself also thinking that somebody in Florida is sitting outside at night and I’m inside in front of a fire and still a little chilled.
Enjoy your Florida stay this winter and post often so I can live vicariously down there through you.
    Have a great New Year!

  36. Great photos! I loved the sign and “You’re not fooling us.” LOL! 🙂 Happy New Year to you, dear Sallie!

  37. Didn’t think you had to worry much about changes in elevation in FL. Too funny.
Lovely moon, which I couldn’t see. So jealous about sitting out in the evening. Here I’d be a frozen statue.

  38. Oh dear…when I first read the sign I saw it as
    Caution, change in Evolution!! LOL.

  39. Lovely shots of those birds. The mosaic of the moon-pictures were actually quite nice. But that elevation sign was indeed hillarious :-D:-D…what do Florida people do when they go out of their state :-D?

  40. lol, it seems like the Ibis in the back is reading a sign and follow instructions 🙂
It seems like you are a restless couple. I think I got it finally 🙂
emails from blogs are mostly “no reply” ones.
my email would be blogkom@naturefootstep.com 🙂
Hope you will have a wonderful New Years eve 🙂

  41. I had to smile at the change in elevation sign! Glad you weren’t huffing and puffing going up that ramp! Looks like you’ve settled in to the beauty of your winter home. Happy 2016, Sallie!

  42. I’m ready for the weather to change its too warm to call it winter. Lovely shots of the Ibis and the moon, we had so many clouds I went out and got a couple shots of it. Happy New Yrs!

  43. Great shots.

  44. More wonderful nature photography!
We got snow and ice ~ am ready for a rental ~ any there? LOL
Wishing you a Healthy and Happy New Year,
    artmusedog and carol

  45. the sign and your ‘you’re not fooling us!’ attitude made me laugh. 🙂

  46. I don’t think I have ever seen a sign that states a change in elevation and advises caution- especially on a boardwalk like this. The cranes have amazingly slim legs that seem so delicately able to handle their body scale and weight. Interesting photos. Wishing you and your family the very happiest New Year.

  47. They are friendly. I watched one watching a family fishing and it came with a foot of the children, probably hoping someone would throw a fish bone. It was in Fairhope, Alabama.

  48. Gave me a smile. Thank you!

  49. tom the backroads traveller

    Love seeing the cranes.

  50. Sallie, Lovely photos as usual. Happy New Year -may 2016 be filled with much joy and many blessings. I’ll get back to posting more this next year-it’s just been too busy to get everything done these days.
