AN AIRBOAT EXPERIENCE

Dozens of places in the areas surrounding Everglades National Park offer Airboat experiences.  But we have resisted the temptation every time we've visited the Park until last week.

And we enjoyed the ride!

I chose the picture above because the hammock (that's what they say here in Florida — we would have said hummock) gives some perspective to the picture… but there are other hammocks that look just the same — and there are huge areas that are nothing but sky and grass.  It would be SO easy to get lost.

Many of the people on the boat were most excited for the chance to see alligators in the wild.  But we've seen hundreds and hundreds of them — quite a few earlier on this trip in fact (and don't worry, I'll be showing them later).  The best part for us was being somewhere out in the middle of all that grass with no land in sight (everything looks the same)  – and realizing that the Everglades really and truly IS a Sea of Grass.

Besides that it was just plain fun.

Coopertown airboatBecause it has rained so much more than usual this winter, the glades are wetter than usual, but there were enough places that had very little water so that we got the idea of gliding over the grass.

Airboats are used for more than tourism — ecologists go out in them to get rid of invasive plants and they were even used to rescue people during Hurricane Katrina.

I forgot to take a picture of our boat — the one on the left is from Coopertown Tours which was the Company we used.

Our boat was longer than this one …. I did turn around to take a picture of the pilot up on his high seat (below).

Here is a brief explanation of an airboat (taken from Wikipedia) and you can go to this link to read more.

An airboat is a flat-bottomed vessel propelled forward by an aircraft-type propeller and powered either by an aircraft or automotive engine.  They are used for fishing, hunting and ecotourism in marshy or shallow areas where a standard engine with a submerged propeller would be impractical.  The engine and propeller are enclosed in a protective metal cage that prevents objects, wildlife (and passengers) from coming in contact with the whirling propeller.  Stopping and reversing direction are dependent on good operator skills.

Our driver (pilot/captain) is stopped in the middle of the sea of grass to answer passenger questions.  The other pictures were taken over the edge of the boat during calmer times on the ride.

Sharing the ride with OUR WORLD on Tuesday; with MOSAIC MONDAY; and with WEDNESDAY WATERS

  1. incredible views of this scenic landscape from the airboat. I have never seen an airboat like this before. Love the last squiggly reflection of the grasses.

  2. Hi Sallie! Well that’s an interesting tour you made.BTW your hammock looks a lot like our wetland in the north of the Netherlands( North-Holland and Friesland ). These parts are also flat and wet. they are protected for wildlife especially birds..
    Have a great week.

  3. I’ve always wanted to do this. I tried in Louisiana but the bayous were too dry. You mentioned about me having a good memory for writing my 1970 trip well I had a diary and a scrap book to help me. I don’t really have a good memory at all.

  4. i enjoyed the trip too, thanks, i love this kind of tour getting lost in the middle of nowhere..

  5. Stop in from Gatina.
I’ve never been on a air boat. My oldest son and his wife have.
    Coffee is on

  6. One of the things I like about Jeb Bush is that when he was governor he fought his own party to do the right thing for the Everglades.

  7. What a wonderful trip, Sallie ! I like flat landscapes and the beautiful skies which go with them !
I’m waiting now for the alligators !

  8. I’ve never been on one of those boats. The glades definitely have a unique beauty.

  9. Very interesting. I’ve never experienced one of those either.
    REALLY nice photos Sallie!

  10. We see them every time we hike to the Withlacoochee River Bridge but we haven’t taken a ride yet. It would be really special to see the Everglades from on of these boats. I’m glad you went and took pics to share! Enjoy your week and these cool temps! Hugs, Diane

  11. airboat sounded strange. Until I realized I have seen them. Must have been fun to ride with it. 🙂

  12. Of course I’ve seen lots of TV programmes (usually travel) which feature these contraptions and wondered whether thay are just a major disturbance to the landscape or a means of educating visitors about the Everglades. As you say perhaps they are one of the only means of fully studying innaccesible parts for scientists?
Blase about the number of alligator sightings? I should be so lucky.

  13. Such fun!

  14. I love the airboat rides and I try to do one every time I’m there. In fact, I was sad we didn’t make time to visit the Everglades when we were in Florida over the holidays. Your shots almost make up for it. 🙂

  15. Oh those alligators saw hundreds of visitors too.
    They were funny.
The news spread around among those alligators.

  16. What fun! I have always wondered if I might like to ride in one- but I imagine it to be SUPER loud.

  17. What a wonderful excursion ! The Everglades say something to me, I wonder if we haven’t been there ages ago ! So you have seen hundreds of crocodiles, then I am a poor orphan, I only see crocodiles in a zoo !

  18. What a great experience. Seems like one of the best ways to tour so much water in the Everglades. Are they terribly noisy?

  19. What a lovely place and must have been a great and fun experience. Have a great day ahead!

  20. Scenic surroundings, Sallie.
I have always wondered about Hovercraft.
When I was a little boy, I had a toy boat that was propelled by a ballon.
I would like to go on one someday, in a place, perhaps sans alligators 🙂
Nice report – enjoy your visit.
    Have a Beautiful Day!
    Peace 🙂

  21. Judith @ Lavender Cottage

I can see where an airboat ride would be fun, we’ve never ventured to the everglades.

  22. Beautiful experience.

  23. Now these fine photos bring back memories of a trip to Florida back in the ’80s, where we spend a couple of nights in a hut on a hammock; it included a ride in a small airplane over the Everglades, and of course airboat rides. That was a very unique experience, and I’ll have to post about it sometime.

  24. How fun! I haven’t been on an airboat in years. My cousins and I used to go riding around on airboats all the time when we were kids. Every once in awhile a snake would manage to get in the boat though and that was a little scary!

  25. This is fascinating. There was an old TV show with some guy that drove an airboat through the Everglades. It looked so interesting!! So fun to see an alligator… or many!

  26. An airboat ride in the Everglades is on my bucket list. I think it would be cool.

  27. I have always wanted to ride on an airboat. It had to be wildly fun!
    Linda

  28. We see these every once in while while out and about here along the coast…but they’re property and in use by the Coast Guard [or law enforcement] always.
That would be a great experience…and thrilling. Enjoyed your photos, and your sharing of all you did.

  29. I’ve seen hundreds of airboats, I’ve been around them for years, I even knew a man who built airboats, but I’ve never ridden in one. They sound like a lot of fun…and yes, the Everglades cover an immense territory so it would be very easy to get good and lost. We used to ride bikes at Shark Valley and there’s a tower there where you can get a good view of the expanse of the
    Everglades.
    I really enjoyed these photos!
BTW, in a recent post on a crane, I did take your name in vain. Heh, heh.

  30. sounds like a blast!!!

  31. How exciting for you both and wonderful shots! Looks like a wonderful place ~ Nature undisturbed.
Wishing you a Happy Week ^_^

  32. Great photos and the wide spaces of grass are really special. That’s one thing I always wanted to do – and never got around to it.

  33. Oh I can imagine how much fun that is. Next time I find myself in Everglades, I will not make the same mistake of not taking this tour.

  34. I must admit I really enjoyed my trip on an airboat when I visited the Everglades.

  35. sylviakirk

Oh, what fun!! I love your captures as always and, as always, they are the next best thing to being there myself!! Hope you have a great new week!! Enjoy!!

  36. I can feel the wind on my face! It must be wonderful to see such wide-open vistas all around you.

  37. Wonderful photos, Sallie! It reminds me of the prairies out here–without the water of course–just all grass and sky! I’m glad you took the ride–I’m sure it was fun!

  38. Wow I have always wanted to do that…hopefully when we finally visit the Everglades Park one day.

  39. Fabulous photos, Sallie. This looks like grand fun and a very different boating/touring perspective.

  40. Oh that does look like fun. Glad you finally took the plunge!

  41. I can only imagine how wonderful that must have been!! What an adventure! Have a grand week!

  42. The word “airboat” sounds so carefree … like a sled whisking through the grasses for miles and miles. What a wonderful experience and how adventurous of you to go for the ride! I went to the link and read that the first airboat, Ugly Duckling, was built in 1905 in Nova Scotia by a team led by Alexander Graham Bell. Another invention, like the phone, that seemed about giving mankind a bigger/broader reach!

  43. riitta k

Interesting ride with that airboat through all that vast grass!

  44. Hello Sallie, The Everglades is an awesome place and habitat for the critters. I can imagine all the gators that are there and in Florida. The Airboat ride sounds like a fun time. Great post, thanks for sharing. Happy Monday, have a great new week ahead!

  45. Well that looked like a whole lot of fun. Great photos!

  46. Lovely scenes-a great trip for you. I had not heard of an Airboat! The nearest we have are completely different Puddleducks on some of the rivers/coasts eg.
