THE JOY OF ORDINARY DAYS

Skies are blue, the sun is shining, and my cold is gone!

A bit of "off" time is a good reminder to be grateful for  the joys of every-day life.

Lots of Vitamin C at the local Farm Market.  No wonder I feel better!    All of these crops are growing here right now.  Hard to remember sometimes that  it is still Winter.

Bill's about a week behind me in getting over that summer Winter cold, so we didn't go far from home at all last week.   I stopped by Butterfly Garden on my way to the Farm Market.  Lots of butterflies, but it was too late in the day (too warm) to get good photographs. They were too flitty — you have to go before it warms up to get them when they're sitting still.

All of these flowers are good food for the butterflies.    Most are native plants for this area.

Dune Sunflower

The demonstration garden is meant to encourage people to plant to provide habitat for butterflies and bees.  It's a part of Manatee Park on the Orange River.  Manatees gather here when the weather is cooler, because the river water here is warmed by output from the nearby power plant.

Blanket Flower

This time of year, the Manatees are out in the Rivers at least during the day.   The water there is warm enough for them now.

I try  to learn the names of  wildflowers, but I have a long ways to go.

Orange River at Manatee Park

Our River water is coffee or tea colored.  This is from the mangroves, which are an important part of the ecological system.

February's snow moon — certainly mis-named for this part of the country.  The pictures are from our porch.  I was still under-the-weather the week the moon was full and that was about as far as I got.   I was happy to have the view and the warmth then, but am even more grateful to be well for it!

  1. Happy to hear that you are returning to good health, Sallie. i have never seen a Manatee and I would love to do so. At this stage I doubt that I will, but I hope those ancient, gentle creatures can stay safe and avoid boat propellors.

  2. I love those moon shots!

So glad to hear that you are well and hope hubby is too soon. The wild flowers are lovely and we don’t need to know their names to enjoy their beauty. The market goodies look delicious.

  4. thanks for your visit and comment ~ lovely posting and photos ~ glad you are feeling better ~ (I did comment before, too)

The flowers are very pretty and the fruit looks very appetizing 🙂
Enjoy the rest of the week.

  12. Sorry to hear about the colds. Last year on our RV trip I got a nasty one on the way home. So far this year we’ve avoided it. Love your sky shot at the beginning. It’s so nice to be in places with nice weather during the cloudy rainy PNW winters. – Margy

  13. Thanks for stopping by my blog and making such a nice comment.
We sure haven’t had enough rain this year but I absolutely love when Spring pops out all over the place.

…I see a yellow flower similar to dune sunflower growing in dry sand soils, I wonder if it a Hawaiian cousin.

  15. You have summed up the season so beautifully through your photos Sallie.
Sending healing and happy vibes for you & Bill.
    Have a happy weekend!

  16. So glad to hear you are better and that your hubby is almost there. Pretty color to see here. We are still in the season of mud here. Soon things will dry up and we’ll get some color again.

  17. Hurray that your feeling better! It’s amazing how pretty ‘ordinary’ things are when you photograph them 🙂 Your photos are so bright and colorful to see, Sallie 🙂

  19. I’m glad you got rid of that nasty cold Sallie. Hubby on the mend too. They surely take it out of you these bugs. On a brighter note I loved your post. Loved the colorful flowers and produce, scenery and those moonshots are amazing. Enjoy the rest of your week 🙂

  22. Indrani

Glad that you are doing good 🙂
    Lovely captures!

  23. Ordinary days are welcome. It’s good to have sometimes calm…
Fine to read, that your cold is gone.
…I wish you a very good week.

  24. Sallie – whew, what a relief it must be to be feeling better. I know I take my good health for granted, so a nasty cold helps me appreciate it! Lovely flowers and scenery down there – we are still buried under snow and will be for some time, so I am enjoying the color in your part of the world. Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

  25. I’m glad you are feeling better, Sallie! I had a bad stomach virus after Christmas and I felt terrible for over a week, so I know what you mean about the treasure of “ordinary days”! We, unfortunately, we can take them for granted. I hope your husband feels better soon. I loved seeing all y our flowers as all we have here is snow!

  26. i’m so use to having Strawberries in Summer, seems strange to see them in your late Winter, glad you’re feeling better.

  27. good that you are feeling better, i am too!! i find books to be very helpful in identifying plants and such. your moon captures are really beautiful!!

  28. Ooooh, those are cool moon shots, Sallie. I especially like how you composed your left photo. Nice contrast of the moonlight in the clouds with the lights.
I want to paint blanket flowers on our back fence. We shall see. 🙂

  29. Wayne and I have been very careful about washing our hands while on our RV trip here in Arizona. Last year I caught a cold on the way home, hopefully that won’t happen this time. – Margy

  30. We didn’t drive over to see the Manatees this winter but we are lucky to see them in the Gulf and in the rivers sometimes. Love the fresh FL fruit in season right now! The strawberries are SO sweet! Enjoy your week! Hope you are both feeling lots better this week!

  31. I’m happy you’re well too, hopefully Bill will be in the pink soon.
It’s been snowing all day here and of course people are driving like morons. There must be lots of them in the ditch because there was a car in a ditch on the way to the pool and an hour and a half later it was still there, lights on along with the wind shield wipers which I thought was funny, like, what’s the point.
There was still snow on the ground when it started in again so how can you forget so soon? I was behind a CA license plate on the way home today and if it’s possible for a car to look terrified and miserable, that one did.
Those orange butterfly flowers look like skeleton fingers—cool!
The fruit looks soooo good, the oranges and tangerines have been pretty lousy the last few months here so maybe the good stuff will float up this way.
Is it a good thing the river is warmed by a power plant?
I do like the idea of the water colored by mangroves which I confess I had to look up. I like the sound of them and the words, “brackish water” which reminds me of a dirty martini.
Cheers, have a great week and enjoy your health.

  32. Glad you’re feeling better, I know the feeling as I had a bad one myself this winter. I love looking at all the locally grown goodies!

  33. This is certainly a warm post with all those fruits, vegetables, and flowers. I can tell Spring is right around the corner here, the sun is higher and the days are longer. March can be cruel though.

  34. Beautiful post Sallie, with many beautiful flowers! Here, suddenly from one week to another all the trees are blooming (it was also 70 degr. yesterday!) Am happy for you, your cold is gone! Saw the mangos – isn’t that interesting, it used to be that mangos were only available in summer, now they were on sale in February! Many thanks for sharing these lovely spring things with All Seasons, and enjoy spring weather:) Jesh

  35. Lovely colors and scenes. I look forward to seeing some butterfly shots at some point. Our daffodil were sprouted up in January! Has never happened that early before. They have flower buds now that are about to pop.

  36. How lucky are you to have those fresh fruit and veg available on your doorstep. Glad you have recovered from your cold. Thanks for your advice about linking my blogs. I hadn’t thought of doing it.

  37. Oh your Sunday sky is lovely. Happy mosaic Monday
    Much❤love

  38. Happy to know your cold is over. I Hope Bill’ll be well soon too ! The “joys of every-day life” are so important ! Vegetables, fruits, flowers, sky, moon… AmitiĂ©s.

  39. I’m glad to hear that your cold has cleared up. We too are doing our best to eat as much fruit and vegetables to benefit from the vitamins. Yours looks so fresh and no doubt from a local resource, which is good. I’ve enjoyed seeing your native flowers and to hear about the area, the river and the creatures such as the manatees that live there. You got wonderful shots of the moon. Thank you for coming by my blog and leaving thoughtful comments.

  40. The night shots are so stunning and distinct it makes me hopeful about the atmosphere where you are. If I didn’t know better … I’d think those moon markings/shadows were continents resembling Earth from a distance.

  41. Hello, The fruits look delicious. I recently bought some strawberries that were shipped from Plant City Fl. Beautiful variety of flowers. I love the view of the mangroves. The moon is gorgeous, lovely sky shots. Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy new week ahead!

  42. Great nature photos Sallie. The moon is bright and the flowers are superb. What I missed, is the Manatee, I would love them.

  43. Good that you are well, the cold gone. Lovely blooms in each capture. We waiting for spring, isn’t it?
    Happy MosaicMonday
